How long do the residency and fellowship last?

The residency is at minimum a one-year program, with length determined in collaboration with residents based on each proposal. The fellowship is a one-year program. Both the residency and the fellowship kick off in summer 2018.

Do I have to cover the cost of travel for gatherings?

Facebook will cover travel, lodging and meal costs for program participants attending in-person gatherings related to the residency or fellowship.

Can my family (or other group members) join me at program gatherings?

In-person gatherings are open to residents and fellows only and you should expect your schedule to be fully booked.

Will child care be provided at program gatherings?

We are unable to provide child care during the weeks spent in residence or at fellowship gatherings.

If I am selected as a resident or fellow, will I need to quit my job or move to a new city?

No. However, both the residency and the fellowship represent an additional time commitment. So before applying, please consider whether you are able to take this on.

Are there guidelines for the grant proposal?

You are welcome to submit any proposal for the most impactful use of grant funds to build your community. However, we do have a few guidelines:

  • If selected, you’ll need to provide a specific plan and itemized budget for how you would use the grant to advance your impact within a one-year time frame.
  • Grants can only be paid to individual residents and fellows, and must be used in support of the grant proposal.
  • Grants may not be used for the following activities:
    • Proselytizing
    • Political campaign activities (e.g. on behalf of an active candidate for elected office)
    • Political lobbying activities (e.g. a 501(c)4 entity in the US)
How will funding be provided?

Your grant funds will be provided as you meet certain milestones.

I’m new to community leadership. Can I use this program to help me develop?

No, this program is for established community leaders with a proven track record.

About the application

How are you selecting program participants?

Every application will be evaluated in a multi-phase consideration process to ensure eligibility, including compliance with all applicable terms and policies governing the use of our apps and services. A diverse selection committee across geography, race, ethnicity, gender identity and political ideology will be assembled from external advisors and Facebook staff to make final selections. Final selections will be based on applicants’ past work building community and the merit of each grant proposal.

What countries do you accept applications from?

We accept applications globally from countries where Facebook can legally operate and where we can legally make payments.

Is there a minimum age requirement?

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or the age of majority in their local country, whichever is higher.

Can I apply as a group or pair?

We will only consider individual applications, but are open to multiple residents or fellows representing the same community or cause.

Does my community need to be registered as a cause or nonprofit in order to apply?

No, applicants do not need to be associated with a legal entity (e.g. a 501(c)3 in the US).

Can a nonprofit apply?

No, only individuals may apply on behalf of themselves. Nonprofit employees may apply in support of their chosen cause or nonprofit, if the employee meets our eligibility requirements.

Is English proficiency required?

No.

How do I get to be considered for the residency?

All applications will be considered for the residency, which comes with a grant of up to $1,000,000 USD. No additional application is required. We will select up to five residents in addition to up to 100 fellows.

How do I establish leadership status for my application if I’m not the creator of my community?

Creator status is not required. However, you must be in a leadership role in your community and the people in your community will have an opportunity to provide feedback on you as a community leader. For example, if your community is a Facebook group, you must be an admin of that group and your community must confirm your leadership in that role.

I lead several communities. Should I submit multiple applications?

Only one application is necessary. The focus of the program is on you as a leader, so we recommend you choose one community (perhaps the one you are most passionate about or most engaged with) to inform your application. Your application can reference several communities if needed.

When will I know if I’m chosen?

We expect to notify residents and fellows in summer 2018. All applicants will be notified as to the status of their application.

How frequently are you taking new applicants?

This is the pilot year of our residency and fellowship program. Please stay tuned for additional opportunities to apply.
